"Enchanting and complex. Every page is filled with magic."-Danielle Paige, New York Times best-selling author of Dorothy Must Die

Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation...and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can't trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland...

"Zoraida Cordova's prose enchants from start to finish. Labyrinth Lost is pure magic." -Melissa Grey, author of The Girl at Midnight

"Magical and empowering, Labyrinth Lost is an incredible heroine's journey filled with mythos come to life; but at its heart, honors the importance of love and family." -
Cindy Pon, author of Serpentine and Silver Phoenix

"A brilliant brown-girl-in-Brooklyn update on Alice in Wonderland and Dante's Inferno. Very creepy, very magical, very necessary." -
Daniel Jose Older, author of Shadowshaper

"Labyrinth Lost is a magical story of love, family, and finding yourself. Enchanting from start to finish." -
Amy Tintera, author of Ruined.

Brittany: Hi Zoraida, thank you for doing this interview with me! ^_^

Zoraida: Thank you for having me!

Brittany: How much of your own background inspired Labyrinth Lost?

Zoraida: The only thing I’d say that I take from my family is Alex’s birthday party. There’s so much food and dancing and all your relatives there at once. Family is important, and the biggest thread in Latin American cultures. Each country has different superstitions and legends.

There is one monster in particular that is inspired by my childhood in Ecuador. When you’re a kid, everyone scares you with monsters. Duendes are evil elves that can steal you away. The Duendes in Labyrinth Lost are a little different, and hopefully I’ll get to bring them back in another book. But the one that’s stuck with me for a long time is the Cuco. In Mexico, there’s the Cucuy, which is a demon. For us (Ecuadorians), we scare kids with the “Cuco.” It’s a demon that eats children who behave badly. I always pictured a black beast with sharp teeth and claws. So, naturally, I turned it into the Maloscuros in Labyrinth Lost.

Everything else, Los Lagos, the cantos, the Deathday—that’s all made up.

Brittany: How can readers help We Need Diverse Books?

Zoraida: The biggest thing you can do is read them without thinking of them as “other books.” They’re also fantasies and contemporaries and science fiction.

Brittany: What are the easiest and most difficult parts of writing Fantasy?

Zoraida: The easiest part is creating the magical world. The hardest part is discovering that there’s a plot hole half way through the book. This is why I outline obsessively.

Brittany: What fictional character (not from your own books) do you most identify with, and why? They could be from any book, movie, or TV show.

Zoraida: Probably Black Widow because of my fighting skills. (Just kidding.)  I think I’m part Phoebe Buffet because I’m weird and part Ponyo because I love ham and the sea.

Brittany: If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?

Zoraida: I’d like the ability to conjure delicious food.

Brittany: What would make you automatically DNF a book?

Zoraida: Stereotypes, voice, and slow pacing.

Brittany: What is the scariest or creepiest thing you’ve ever done for fun?

Zoraida: I went wave running around Key West. I was so afraid I was going to fall off or something was going to jump out of the water and eat me. But nothing bad happened and the kick of adrenaline was fun in the end.

Brittany: What are some of your favorite 2016 books?

Zoraida: I’ve been slacking on reading because I’ve been on deadline. Some of my favorites have been GIRL LAST SEEN by Anne Greenwood Brown and Heather Anastasiu; NIGHTINGALE, SING by Karsten Knight; and SAGA volume 6.

Brittany: Thanks again, Zoraida, for being on my blog today!

  9. This is a book that didn't initially grab my attention with the cover or synopsis but the more I read about it and the more my friends talk about it the more my interest is piqued! I also really like fantasy based in less-often-written cultures because I love to travel and reading is sometimes the closest I get. Great interview!

    1. It's often my friends recommendations that make me want to read a book. I also love it when a book is based on cultures that aren't often written about. I hope you check out Labyrinth Lost!

  10. Gorgeous blog tour post sweetie :D Love the interview. <3 Not a book for me.. but it do seem interesting :) I'm a bit bitter, lol, because this author have me blocked on twitter. Ugh. And I don't know why. I have never talked to herr.. sigh. I did rate her book with 2 stars in 2012. A book I hated, lol :) Maybe she blocked me because of that? I don't know. It's just a bit annoying, hih :) But aaaanyway. This book do seem sort of interesting :) Thank you for sharing. <3

  11. I'm definitely interested in this one, and I'd enter to win a copy, but since I would want to take it when I meet the author at the end of September, and I can only take 10 books total, I'm going to wait and buy a copy there!
