Waiting on Wednesday: Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh

My TBR list is always growing and I thought it would be fun to share my anticipation for those books with all of you. This is not my own original meme; it belongs to Breaking the Spine. It specifically spotlights upcoming releases. As it implies in the title, I'll be posting this meme on Wednesdays. Please feel free to comment and let me know what books you guys are waiting on as well!

The Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons
Publication Date: May 2nd, 2017
Pre-Order: Amazon | B&N | Book Depository
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Wrath and the Dawn, comes a sweeping, action-packed YA adventure set against the backdrop of Feudal Japan where Mulan meets Tamora Pierce.

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.
First of all, can we talk about that gorgeous cover?! It's fierce and elegant at the same time!

Second, Mulan is my favorite Disney princess and I'm so excited to be reading a Mulan inspired story.

And to top it all off, it's written by one of my auto-buy authors! What more could I possible ask for?

What do you guys think? Is this on your TBR? Have you read Renée Ahdieh's The Wrath and The Dawn duology? Let me know!

I live in North Carolina (Go Heels!) with my husband Victor and our dog Mushu. My YA fantasy novel, THE WRATH AND THE DAWN, is available wherever books are sold. Its sequel, THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER, will be published on April 26, 2016. In my spare time, I like to cook, dance salsa, and wreak havoc on the lives of my characters.

  5. Yay, Mulan is my fave disney princess also! :D That cover is absolutely gorgeous, when I first saw it yesterday I just ogled it for a good 10 minutes. So, so pretty---they need to do lots of swag to match! :D (Eyeshadow palette in these cover colors, anyone?? I wish they did more makeup swag lol). Great pick, lovely!

    1. I can't stop staring at it. They do have posters of the cover out and I was snagged one from NYCC, I don't normally take posters but there are a few that are special cases. This being one of them because it's so gorgeous. They really should do more make-up swag, I'd be all over that! But it's probably expensive haha.

Thanks for stopping by, lovely <3

  15. I love that Renee is branching out from the European retellings, so many other great stories to tell. And if this book is anything like The Wrath and the Dawn, I know she's going to rip my heart out in the best way.

    1. If I'm not mistaken, The Wrath and The Dawn is based on Persia, which is what would be considered part of Asia but I'm really excited to read this book regardless. I hope you will too ^_^

  16. OMG THAT COVER IS AMAZING AND I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! I didn't realise it was going to have Japanese influences, though?! I think that's an interesting choice to do a Chinese/Mulan retelling but with Japanese setting. BUT I'M STILL SO EXCITED. So that's not a negative, more an observation hahha.😂 But omg that cover. Why isn't it 2017 yet.
