Foolish Hearts Blog Tour: Interview with Emma Mills

Hey lovelies! I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! To start off your week, I've got a wonderful interview with Emma Mills for her new book Foolish Hearts! I hope you all enjoy it, and be sure to check out the other stops on the tour!

Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
Pub. Date: December 26th, 2017
A contemporary novel about a girl whose high school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream leads her to new friends—and maybe even new love.

The day of the last party of the summer, Claudia overhears a conversation she wasn't supposed to. Now on the wrong side of one of the meanest girls in school, Claudia doesn't know what to expect when the two are paired up to write a paper—let alone when they're both forced to try out for the school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

But mandatory participation has its upsides—namely, an unexpected friendship, a boy band obsession, and a guy with the best dimpled smile Claudia's ever seen. As Claudia's world starts to expand, she finds that maybe there are some things worth sticking her neck out for.

Emma Mills is the author of First & Then, This Adventure Ends, and Foolish Hearts known to her subscribers as vlogger Elmify. She is also cocreator and cohost of the "life skills" channel How to Adult, which ended in 2016.

Was there anything different about your writing process when writing Foolish Hearts versus when you were writing your previous novels?

I wrote FOOLISH HEARTS relatively quickly compared to my first two books, so that was definitely different. I knew I wanted to write something that was fun and fluffy, so I allowed myself to be as indulgent as I wanted while drafting, and just have a great time with it!

Have you ever been in a Shakespeare play? If so, what play and which character? If not, which play would you like to be in and as who?

I have! When I was eleven, my sister and I were in a production of AS YOU LIKE IT playing young Rosalind and young Celia. These characters aren’t scripted, but the production we were in featured us as younger version of the main characters in a couple scenes (sans lines!) at the beginning and the end of the show. It was a ton of fun!

What is the most memorable school assignment you have ever gotten?

In sixth grade science class, we made models of plant and animal cells using Rice Krispy treats as the cells and various candies as the different organelles. I don’t think I’ve had a tastier assignment since.

Which of your characters in this book do you personally identify with, and why?

I probably identify most with Claudia. She is a bit introspective and can get held up sometimes by her own thoughts and worries, which I can relate to!

What are some of your favorite and least favorite tropes in books?

Enemies-to-friends is one of my favorite tropes (which is why it made it into FOOLISH HEARTS!). In terms of least favorites, I think the love triangle trope can be difficult to pull off these days.

Who was your first OTP (one true pairing or favorite couple)?

Probably Sabrina and Harvey from Sabrina the Teenage Witch; I didn’t know what shipping was at the time, but I definitely shipped them nonetheless!

What's next for you? Could you share with us any details about your next project?

I’ve recently finished up a draft of my fourth book, which should hopefully be out in winter of 2019. It’s about a girl who is trying to get a famous country music singer—her small town’s only claim to fame—to play a concert to raise money for the high school band to march in the Rose Parade. The hitch is that the singer has sworn never to return!
