The Disney VILLAINS series by Serena Valentino explores how the antagonists in Disney movies became some of storytelling's most iconic villains. In the first five VILLAINS books, we see how the Evil Queen, the Beast, Ursula, Maleficent, and Mother Gothel fall into darkness, through the instigation of the mysterious Odd Sisters: Lucinda, Martha, and Ruby. The tale of the legendary golden flower is widely known. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the flower is coveted by an old witch to keep herself young and beautiful. And always the flower is used to save a dying queen, who then gives birth to a princess with magical hair. Not willing to lose the flower, the old witch steals the princess and locks her away in a high tower, raising her as her own. But the princess always finds out who she truly is and manages to defeat the old witch. And yet this is only half the story. So what of the old witch, Mother Gothel? Where does she come from? And how does she come across the magical golden flower? Here is one account that recounts a version of the story that has remained untold for centuries . . . until now. It is a tale of mothers and daughters, of youth and dark magic. It is a tale of the old witch.

My Top 5 Favorite Disney Villains
(In no particular order)
Mother Gothel
Mother Gothel is my favorite villain of the recent Disney Villains, she's sassy and so wicked. Plus, she has one of the best villain songs ever!
Hades
Hades is probably the most GIF-able villain and that makes me love him even more. He's diabolic, he's hilarious . . . and somehow, he's also extremely relatable xD
Maleficent
Maleficent is an epic villain. She is so terrifying that even Aurora's mother called her "your excellency" . . . now only if the Queen had just issued her an invitation . . .
Ursula
Now, here is a villain whose backstory I would love to learn more about. Why was she banished in the first place? Honestly, I always suspected (even as a child) that Triton and Ursula had some torrid affair or something haha
Gaston
Gaston, has always been an enigma to me because I hate everything about his personality, but I also . . like him? There's something about him that's just so . . . fun?
Additionally, Gaston was played by Hugh Jackman (one of my favorite celebrities) in a Broadway production at one point AND by Luke Evans (who is just a delight) in the recent live-action film . . . and both of these men have just made this character somehow love-able to me.

Gaston is sooo confusing because he's a jerk but also charming????
ReplyDeleteMy fave five would be:
Judge Frollo
Dr Facilier
Ursula
Maleficent
Jafar
Right? He's like that kind of charming that you find entertaining but not the kind you'd actually find dreamy, I guess haha.
DeleteFrollo used to terrify me as a child! If I had made this a top ten list, Jafar would definitely be on it, along with Scar from the Lion King!
Thanks for stopping by!
I love the Disney Villains so much! My top 5 would be:
ReplyDeleteMaleficent
Queen of Hearts

ReplyDeleteOoh, yes, I love (or, love to hate) Mother Gothel, Gaston, and Ursula. Also Scar (because of Be Prepared).
ReplyDeleteMother Gothel is my favorite too!
ReplyDeleteI DEFINITELY AGREE WITH URSULA AND MALEFICENT. Two classic villains, one sassy-and-evil, and one just pure devious. ♥ I also love Captain Hook and Jafar!
ReplyDeleteHades is one of my favourite villains as well - my "love" for him only grew after playing Kingdom Hearts. I quite like too the Queen of Hearts.
ReplyDeleteHappy readings! ;)
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
Oh, man, you hit all the good ones! I love how sassy Hades is. I also really like Scar and, well, they're not Disney, but I love Rothbart from Swan Princess and Rasputin from Anastasia.
