Waiting on Wednesday: Obsidio & A Reaper at the Gates

My TBR list is always growing and I thought it would be fun to share my anticipation for those books with all of you. This is not my own original meme; it belongs to Breaking the Spine. It specifically spotlights upcoming releases. As it implies in the title, I'll be posting this meme on Wednesdays. Please feel free to comment and let me know what books you guys are waiting on as well!

Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Expected Pub. Date: March 13th, 2017
Buy it: Amazon | Barnes and Noble | Book Depository
From bestselling author duo Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff comes the exciting finale in the trilogy that broke the mold and has been called "stylistically mesmerizing" and "out-of-this-world-awesome."

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza--but who knows what they'll find seven months after the invasion? Meanwhile, Kady's cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza's ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys--an old flame from Asha's past--reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.

Do I really need to explain how I'm excited I am for this book? ... Yes?

Beyond the Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.

The Blood Shrike, Helene Aquilla, is assailed on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable, while the Commandant capitalizes on his madness to bolster her own power. As Helene searches for a way to hold back the approaching darkness, her sister's life and the lives of all those in the Empire hang in the balance.

Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she'd have to fight.

And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias's devotion--even at the cost of his humanity.

Looking at this cover, it feels like it's saying:

Um, YES!

I need to know what's going to happen to my babies. They have all been through so much and I just want them to be happy but Sabaa Tahir keeps stabbing me over and over again.

So, basically...

Spent my childhood in the Mojave Desert, where I didn’t have cable and thus chose to entertain myself with books and radio. My parents assured me that I wanted to become a doctor, but a brief stint working in a hospital changed my mind.

I left the desert for university at 17, graduated from UCLA a few years later, and went to work for The Washington Post directly after. Five years later, I left the Post and started working on a book.

If I could be anything, I’d be a space explorer, but a cool one, like Jean-Luc Picard.

This week it looks like I'm waiting for books that are going to crush my soul into a million pieces, and I'll probably thank them for it haha.

What are you guys waiting for this week? Happy books? Books that will hurt? Which ones? Let me know!

  1. I went for one that looks like it's going to be a heart-wrencher, too this week LOL. Maybe we just don't want to be happy. xD I have no excused for not having read either of these series--especially with my intense love of Amie Kaufman's Starbound series. I'll fix it someday.

    1. It's not that we don't want to be happy, it just happens that the best books cause a lot of pain haha. You really need to read both of these series and The Illuminae Files are such fast reads!

  3. Okay same with you on Obsidio. MY BODY IS READY FOR THAT BOOK AND IT CAN JUST TAKE ME AND RUIN ME.

I LOVE the new covers for An Ember in the Ashes! It was love at first sight, okay. BUT book 1 wasn't a hit for me (around a 2.5-3 starish read? I had some grapples with the characters) so I still need to catch up. These new covers got me hyped though so perhaps soon!

  5. So many people had been debating about whether the Tahir books were going to be a duology or trilogy last year and then I lost track of the debate, but I am happy to hear that everyone is getting more of the story! Great gifs. :)

  7. Great choices. I've not read any series but have both Illuminae books on my shelf. I love the cover for this new one as well. So they did a cover change on the other series. I like this one better than the previous but I bet a lot of people will be angry.

    1. You should read Illuminae and Gemina asap! I bet you will love them! And they are very fast reads despite their size.

There is a lot of conversation about the new covers for An Ember in the Ashes series but the most important thing is what's behind the cover anyway.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  24. GOD I can't wait for Obsidio! The books in that series are SOO gorgeous! I'm a big fan of Jay Kristoff and Amie Kauffman, and I really need to read more of their other books.
About the cover change for An Ember in the Ashes series... not the BIGGEST fan. I am incredibly grateful that they are representing the diverse characters, but the design still looks a bit boring to me. This type of artwork for representing humans is just not my thing.
SUPER excited for both books, though!

    1. Yes, they are so beautiful and not to mention, brilliant!

I totally hear you about the Ember covers. While I'm happy for what this means for marginalized people I love the old designs, and wish more that they combined the concepts. Either way though the book is going to be amazing.

Both books are going to be great though!
