He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her…
Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from the human resistance.
Shelter in place.

Which seems like good advice at first. Stay put. Await rescue. Raven doesn’t like feeling helpless but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit, their survival comes to depend on trusting each other…

Was there any difference in your approach to writing Zero Repeat Forever compared to any of your other books?

ZRF was my first Nanowrimo book, so I wrote a lot FASTER than I had in the past. It’s also my first science fiction, so I had to do a lot more thinking about the world-building.

What are your favorite and least favorite types of scenes to write?

I like writing kissing scenes! Also action scenes. I don’t like scenes with a lot of dialog, especially ones where you need to do a lot of exposition.

What is the strangest thing you've ever had to Google for research?

Like a lot of writers I worry that the FBI will come after me for my searches on things like “grenade” and “toxic gas”. Probably the weirdest thing I’ve ever Googled recently is how to say “snowflake” in other languages. My favorite was the Afrikaans “sneeuvlokkie”

Are any of your characters based on people you know? If so, then who?

Most of my characters share at least some characteristics with me, but no one in Zero Repeat Forever is based on any real person.

Which of your characters do you personally relate to the most, and why?

I relate to Eighth because he is so lost most of the time, both physically and socially. He has memory problems as do I, and he prefers the company of one friend over crowds, as do I.
Have you ever considered writing under a pseudonym?

I might write some adult romances under another name. Wait and see. ;-)

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Writing to the end and completing projects, is one of the hardest things. My advice would be to start small—even a poem, then work up to a short story, then a novella, before attempting a novel.

Can you tell us anything about your next project?

I’m writing the sequel to Zero Repeat Forever right now. After that I think I’ll write a middle grade fantasy but I haven’t quite decided.

  4. Haven't heard about this until now, but it sounds amazing! Love the interview as well. Her advice for aspiring writers was on point! Normally I just hear "keep trying" and "don't give up", which is great advice, but sometimes it loses it's meaning after being said so many times.
